    Nera’s Notches (Cheile Nerei)

Probably, to its own luck, National Park Cheile Nerei-Beusnita from Caras-Severin county, is extremely hard accessible for tourists. For instance, from Bucharest to Oravita, you should cover about 520 kilometers. In addition you have to cover another 30 km until you reach the ex miner locality , Sasca Montana, which is a place where you can begin your trip towards any of the tourist attractions of the park, reaching more than 36.000 ha. But every hour spent through this Romanian paradise corner will worth it.

I cannot think at anything but the fact that the trails of the oldest European man, of an Cro-Magnon aged 42.000 years, were discovered in close proximity of this national park, in Anina. Perhaps from here it was about to start the greatest human migration of the first people to the rest of the European Continent and through Atlantic Ocean. As a matter of fact, there is a difference in age of at least 15,000 years between the oldest fossils that were discovered at the East of Iron Gates (Portile de Fier) and the ones brought to light in their West.

This is, in fact, the first impression you get from the impressive notches of the river Nera, the feeling that, in a way or another, you have travelled in time, somewhere in a period where nature hadn’t been spoiled and where wilderness had still controlled the Earth. Huge forests, waterfalls, caves, lakes whose water hypnotize you through their unnatural colours, rocks difficult to reach and tracks forcing you to cross a cold and torrential Nera... a tellable adventure for those who hadn’t visited those places yet

It’s almost impossible not to bow in front of this cathedral of nature where time has stopped in order to surprise, as in a picture, everything beautiful nature could give. And because words are useless in front of the feeling the wild beauty of Cheile Nerei could give, we’ll let the images speak for themselves about a paradise which is closer to us than we have ever imagined ...

    Sights

Ochiul Beiului The lake "Ochiul Beu"/”Beu Eye” is situated at 310 m altitude in the angle formed by the junction of Beusnita with Beu Sec. It has an oval shape, a surface of 284 square meters, and is 3,6 meters deep.

Lacul Dracului The Devil’s Lake is situated on Nera’s left lakeside, it was founded through a cave’s ceiling collapse. Stretching on a surface of 700 square meters it is the biggest Karst Lake not only from Caras-Severin but also from the entire country. The Devil’s Lake is 9 meters deep.

WHAT TO DO IN SASCA MANTANA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS IN 7 DAYS

    1. For those who had barely arrived and are anxious to make a short excursion within the area, we recommend you a 3 hours round trip, through Susara notches, an easy journey and as final attraction, you reach Susara waterfall. The route being easy, it is recommended to have a walk with kids also.
The journey expands along the valley with the same name, crossing the water it’s made either at the level with it either at a small height towards this. You can see Susara Hut (the ex casino and restaurant), in renovation, as well as few of the entrance of the old miner exploatation.

    2. A beautiful trip is possible, where the excursionist, after about two hours cat walk, has accomplished getting over few handmade rock subways (their realization seems it had been accomplished during ottoman occupation), up to Bei Bridge. The expedition takes three hours round trip and is not very difficult. The leaving point is Cheile Nerei Pension, crossing over the natural bridge from downtown of Sasca Română.

    3. Bei Bridge – Trout farm - Ochiul Beiului - Beusnita Waterfall. An easy track, the circuit is only four hours round trip walking, having an enviable fauna and flora, will delight our eyes step by step. It is to consider also the climbing down to „La Vaioaga” Waterfall. And as a feature we are introduced to Ochiul Bei, which is a lake of 4,5m deep and has a diameter of almost 15 meters, water springing from its bottom, with a shape of a natural spring.

    4. A beautiful journey of about 10 hours walking, and the final attraction being Lacul Dracului/The devil’s Lake, this journey it carried on under the shape of a circuit, starting from Sasca Montana, on the way that leads us to Stinapari – Poiana La Logor, then through Ogasul Porcului, downtown to Lacul Dracului (lake made from the downfallen of a cave and which is about 22 m deep, his origin being a Karst lake). The road goes on towards Cantonul Damian – Podul Bei - Sasca Romana and closes the circuit reaching Sasca Montana. The journey is a bit difficult.

    5. The heaviest route, is covering the entire Cheile Nerei, by leaving from Sopotul Nou and arriving in Sasca Romana or Montana. Covered on a 22 km length, the expedition takes place along water course Nera, this being considered the wildest notches from Romania. You need 2 or 3 days and a few camping places if you want to see anything. Along this path you will meet caves, abysses, snagged roads, cable crossing and so on.
The difference of level between the leaving point and the arriving one being small (40m), you can also practice rafting. The Rafting on the river Nera (with a lengths of 32 km), is organized by a specialized company having its office at Cheile Nerei Pension, lasting 4-8 hours (according to the season and the river depth), but with a low degree of difficulty.

    6. With an average degree of difficulty and only a few hours walking, you can visit the ruins of Historical Fortress built by Queen Maria Tereza situated on Coruna Hill (Potoc), where you can see even The Danube (when the atmosphere is dry) or you can hear the floating of river Bei, when the wind isn’t blowing.

    7. Assuming that the sejour in this lovely area is about to end, I recommend you to have a short walk of only 2 km, along Nera river, to visit the Monastery with the same name, offering yourself at the same time calmness. Don’t forget to visit the Orthodox Church from Sasca (rebuilt in 1877) and catholic church from Sasca Montana built in 1755.

Another options In accordance with Cheile Nerei Pension, you can choose riding an ATV to Crucea Otomanului, Green House or ride on the old roman road, or many other different activities for having a good time offered by it. I wouldn’t like you leaving without having short walks in Sasca Montana parish, with its villages, on the alley „Varati” or „Spanzurati” (nowadays Mihai Novac), to admire the old or new architecture, to listen some history or legends, or without visiting The Village Museum (the house of Mr. Tautu), and why not, eating a delicious lunch in an enjoyable atmosphere at „Old Mill” Restaurant (Sasca Montană Nr.530)

    Sasca Montană

SASCA MONTANA COMMUNE Together with the villages (Sasca-Romană, Bogodinţi, Slatina Nera and Potoc) is situated on the edges of the River Nera, in a blessed area, where it seems as if time has stopped.

Many years ago there was a flourishing mining area where cupper ore and other non ferrous metals were mined. After 1990, as in many other places in the country, the mining industry decreased extremely, and this led to cessation of the activity in the area. The inhabitants have moved to locations where they could work, and those who remained have tried to make ends meet with other activities. But the biggest advantage of the area is not yet exploited at its high performance. Agro tourism can become the main activity of the commune, as a result of the highest number of holiday houses and pensions. The tourists can spend here unforgettable moments, close to the nature, no matter the season.

You can come anytime and assure of those things. You are all welcome on these beautiful lands. Each of you can participate in developing and improving in some way the area.

Sasca Montana is situated at 130 km from Timisoara Airport, 80 km from Resita, 27 Km from Oravita and 130 km from Belgrade Airport.
